About Land O' Lakes
What to know here.
Land O' Lakes got its name by popular vote at a June 13, 1949 meeting of the Denham-Drexel Civic Association, and the state recognized it in 1950. Before that, the area was a string of small communities, among them Denham, Drexel and Ehren, and lumber and turpentine towns grew up along the railroads. By the 1930s citrus was the main industry.
A 2003 Tampa Tribune article counted about 50 lakes within 18 square miles. Rapid growth began in the 1990s. Census Bureau estimates now put the median home in the Land O' Lakes area at 1999, with about a third built in the 2000s. Septic is a big part of the picture here.
The Florida Water Management Inventory lists about 3,150 parcels across the three Land O' Lakes ZIP codes as known or likely septic, most of them in 34639, where that works out to about one for every four single family detached homes. When a drain backs up in a Land O' Lakes home, the cause can be inside the house or out in the yard.
Plumbing notes for Land O' Lakes homes
A running toilet adds up on septic
The EPA says a single leaky or running toilet can add as much as 200 gallons of water a day to a septic system. On a home with a tank and drainfield, a running toilet is more than a water bill problem, so it is worth fixing quickly.
Look after the drainfield
The drainfield is part of the plumbing on a septic lot. EPA guidance is to never park or drive on it, to plant trees far enough away that roots cannot reach the system, and to keep roof drains, sump pumps and other rainwater drainage away from the drainfield area.
Pasco County's regional water
Pasco County Utilities posts a separate water quality report for each system it runs, so look up the one for your address. Its Regional Water System, for one, has 15 deep wells in the Floridan Aquifer around the county and also buys water from Tampa Bay Water, whose desalinated supply comes from Hillsborough Bay.
