About Temple Terrace

What to know here.

Temple Terrace was planned in the 1920s as a golf course community along the Hillsborough River, on land that had been part of Bertha Palmer's hunting preserve. By 1925 the clubhouse, the golf course and a number of houses were built, many in the Mediterranean Revival style with stucco walls and Spanish tile roofs, and the city was incorporated by a legislative act in May of that year.

Most of the housing came later. Census Bureau estimates give a median year built of 1982 for Temple Terrace, with about one home in five built before 1970 and about half built in the 1970s and 1980s.

Temple Terrace also runs its own water utility. The city draws from 10 wells in the Floridan Aquifer and treats the water at two plants, with a process that includes aeration, lime softening, filtration and chlorination. So the right report to read about your tap water is the city's own, not Tampa's or the county's.

Plumbing notes for Temple Terrace homes

  • 1950s houses, original drains

About one in ten Temple Terrace homes was built in the 1950s, according to Census estimates. Original drains in those houses have been in service longer than the 50 to 60 years InterNACHI gives below ground cast iron waste pipe. If a 1950s house still has its original drains and a clog keeps coming back, the line deserves a close look.

  • City well water

Because the city treats its own groundwater, the City of Temple Terrace publishes its own annual water quality report and says it tests for more than 100 regulated contaminants. Its water page links the current report and recent sampling results.

  • Septic around the edges

The Florida Water Management Inventory lists about 690 known or likely septic parcels in ZIP code 33617 and about 360 in 33637. Both ZIP codes are shared with neighboring parts of Tampa, so not every one of those parcels is inside the city, but septic does turn up here.

Questions we get

Temple Terrace questions.

My Temple Terrace mail says Tampa. Am I covered?

Yes, if your ZIP code is 33617 and 33637. Both are shared with neighboring parts of Tampa, and we serve all of each.

Where does Temple Terrace get its water?

From the city's own utility. Temple Terrace draws from 10 wells in the Floridan Aquifer and treats the water at two plants, so the city's annual report, not Tampa's, is the one that describes your tap water.

Do you work on older Temple Terrace homes?

Yes. Before we quote, we look at what the house actually has, from the drains to the water heater, and you get a written price before any work starts.

Where the facts on this page come from

Census figures are U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey estimates for 2020 to 2024. Septic counts are parcels marked known or likely septic in the Florida Water Management Inventory, by ZIP code.
